october - November 2019hewing wittare present: inward - coming in from outside with maryam hina hasnain & veera rustomjiAs part of the Art Licks 2019 theme of Interdependence, Hasnain and Rustomji created a dialogue between their work and practice. Hasnain's fabric pieces depicted the unravelling of non-linear historical narratives of South Asia's fractured past in her cut textile pieces, while Rustomji explored ideas of masculine identities and power play, painting directly onto fabric, in this case bedsheets and pillowcases.
September - october 2019Jonny Voss: forest of DrawingIllustrator Jonny Voss used large rolls of paper to record his journeys during the Summer of 2019, including Norfolk and Wales and displayed his 'diaries' at 1B Window Gallery. Like a visual stream of consciousness, it suited his love of drawing, both abstract and figurative as a way to record his memories. Jonny loves working on large-scale pieces, and has completed commissions for Selfridges, private murals and mark-making workshops with local schools.
august - september 2019dark yellow dot presents Joke Valerie Amusan: unpublished voicesArtist Joke Valerie Amusan celebrates women of colour and champions their voices, challenging the often negative portrayal of black women in the media. Employing materials such as hessian and wool, she explores the power of words and objects in her work.
june - july 2019kirstin sibley & rachel gomes: beryl Swain - need for speedBeryl Swain: Need for Speed tells the story of the first female solo motorbike rider to enter the TT Race on the Isle of Man in 1962.
